Year-Round Ghost Tours with School Tours of America

Spooktacular Journeys

by Alanis Naranjo

It’s the spookiest time of the year—Halloween! While spooky season may officially last just one month, with School Tours of America, the thrills can continue all year long. We offer ghost tours throughout the East Coast that run year-round, providing students with spine-chilling experiences in historic towns like Old Alexandria, VA, Colonial Virginia, Gettysburg, PA, and Salem, MA.

Our goal is to enhance your tour with an element of curiosity and mystery, creating an unforgettable adventure for you and your students. Be sure to ask your Trip Specialist or Tour Coordinator about adding a ghost tour to your itinerary!

Read below to discover some of the exciting tours available to your students, plus a teacher's testimonial after years of enjoying the East Coast ghost tours!

Old Alexandria, Virginia

In Old Alexandria, students will experience the town through a different lens on a walking tour covering 1 to 1.5 miles, led by a guide in historical costume. Stops include the town’s oldest church, where the ghostly figure of an unknown Civil War soldier has reportedly been seen in the shadows, and other sites featuring tales of a mysterious woman who, though nameless for over a century, allegedly appeared at a recent presidential event. Who—or what—you’ll encounter remains a thrilling mystery!

Colonial Virginia

Our Colonial Virginia ghost tours offer a similar immersive experience and are available as an optional add-on. Here, guides lead groups along historic roads, recounting haunting tales adjusted for the students' age group. Listen carefully for the ghostly hoofbeats that you hear on the cobblestones in the distance. These tours give a fascinating look into the town’s history and its eerie legends, adding an educational yet spooky twist to your trip.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

According to History.com, Gettysburg is considered one of the most haunted places in America. Thousands of soldiers died in the battle that raged here, and many believe that their souls remain. Keep your eyes open for the lady in white who searches for her lost love or see if you can catch the scent of cigar smoke in The Dobbin House as its owner and founder, Alexander Dobbin, often appears there. Don’t miss this ghost tour on your next visit to Gettysburg!

Salem, Massachusetts

A year-round hotspot for ghost stories and witch lore, Salem is often included in our Boston destination tours. Students will enjoy a witch-themed tour that takes them to famous gravesites and the renowned Salem Witch Museum, which recreates scenes from the infamous 1600s witch trials. This interactive experience brings history to life, making every day feel like Halloween.

Teacher Testimonial: Lynnse Self

Lynnse Self, a former teacher and current STA staff member who traveled with us for ten years (following in her mother’s 20-year footsteps), shared how much students and parents alike enjoy our ghost tours. The guides tailor the “scare factor” based on the group’s grade level, ensuring older students get a spookier experience. Parents also enjoy the ghost tours, as the guides’ storytelling and interactive performances captivate all ages.

We hope you enjoy every part of your tour experience! If you choose a ghost tour, you’re in for an exciting adventure that will add a dash of mystery to your students’ journey. For questions or more information, feel free to reach out to your Tour Coordinator. Until next time—Let’s Go!
